When artists get together, magic happens! In June, I teamed up with fellow photographer Kristina Kay and model Jess Kirsten for a two-day shootout. We began our project on a Monday evening at Kristina’s beautiful boudoir studio in downtown Mooresville. We broke for the night, then resumed shooting the following morning at Camp North End.
Monday

Kristina’s space, the Lake Norman Boudoir studio, is nestled in downtown Mooresville. The natural light studio features large windows, a dramatic back wall, and a huge selection of props that can be styled and arranged in so many ways!

Whenever I shoot in Kristina’s studio, I style setups with Kristina’s collection of dramatic parlor palms. I love both the shape of the leaves and pop of green!

I’ve followed Jess Kirsten a while, fascinated by her bold posing technique. The large studio windows in the boudoir studio provide a multitude of options for framing a portrait subject. This is perfectly suited to Jess’ signature posing style!

As the sun began to set, we finished the photo shoot with 10 minutes of outdoor shooting. We utilized a cute mini park just outside the Lake Norman Boudoir studio. The fading sun provided a pretty, ethereal light -perfect for backlighting Jess.

Tuesday
On Tuesday morning, we reconvened the next morning at Camp North End, an industrial-park-turned-retail-space that is always growing and changing!

One of the reasons I love Camp North End is the varied urban landscape. The buildings and towers translate into interesting leading lines and shapes in images. I use reflection techniques often when shooting at this location to add unique visual elements in-camera.

Camp North End features vibrant murals around every corner! Public art serves makes for interesting backdrops.

We ended the shoot at Camp North End’s old train depot -an industrial station next to abandoned railroad tracks. The Charlotte skyline is faintly visible in the background of this dramatic spot.

The three of us (Kristina, Jess, and I) had so much fun getting creative together over these two days. Here’s to hoping we work together again soon!
