In early November, I partnered with fellow photographer Kristina Kay (Lake Norman Boudoir) to create a very special styled shoot, Scorpio Rising, for her teenager, Rhea, in honor of their 15th birthday.
I was thrilled to be included in Kristina’s special project for her teen! Kristina constructed this enchanted celestial concept that includes several of Rhea’s interests, including herbalism and crystals.
A styled shoot is a collective effort by a team of creatives to create a conceptual photoshoot -in this case, a enchanting celestial shoot. Styled shoots like Scorpio Rising are a fantastic way to connect with other industry professionals and create beautiful, valuable marketing material for every brand involved.
Our first set was a portion table, complete with colorful bottled “potions” (actually Gatorade). I styled the setup with organic materials of marble, wood, and bone, along with Kristina’s collection of brass candelabra.
I created these gold dangle earrings especially for Rhea and this styled shoot!
Our second setup was this herbalist flatlay on a table that I put together. I love including dried and live items whenever I can for styling! I arranged several strawflowers, eucalyptus sprigs, air plants, and bunny tails with our collection of crystals and jars.
Peacock chairs are trendy for a reason! Kristina brought hers from her studio, and it made for a perfect setup element.
The skull planter (below) was made by local business Queen City Crete.
The dramatic skirt that Rhea wore was the perfect flatlay backdrop!
With the last little bit of blue-hour light, we photographed these classic-painting like images. Honestly, these are my favorite! The golden light was so gentle and flattering.
