In the spring, I had the fantastic opportunity to work with Regina D for the first time for a birthday portrait session …on her actual birthday! I designed and created four unique setups to utilize for her studio session based on her taste.
Regina, a down-to-earth and very kind lady, is a real estate agent based in Charlotte. She’s a mother of three grown-up boys and enjoys acting and singing. As you can see, she has a great sense of style and photographs beautifully!

We shot Regina’s birthday portraits at the former Lake Norman Boudoir studio in downtown Mooresville. I utilized a number of the studio’s furniture pieces and supplemented with a collection of my own props and house plants!
Setup One, Outfit One
We started the shoot off with this simple setup inspired by Regina’s love of palm trees. I love the way her vibrant red dress takes center stage in the images!

I’ve found that movement is a great way to warm up my clients! I got Regina moving with some twirling. I added the dreamy effects on the left side of the images below in-camera using a prism.

Setup Two, Outfit Two
I had dreamed up the ethereal setup below before talking with Regina, and was delighted to find that it fit her taste! When I questioned her and discovered she likes pampas grass, sparkly things, the color gold, and column candles, I knew this concept would be perfect for her.

Whenever I work with a new client, I go into the shoot unaware of how comfortable they will be in front of my lens or what kind of posing they will be comfortable with. I was thrilled to find that Regina not only warmed up in a few minutes, but transitioned easily into bold poses!

Setup Three, Outfit Two
Regina contributed a collection of props to the birthday portraits! She brought cake pops, macaron, perfume, and a glam little tiara for us to work with. As a lover of fun props, I was delighted to have so many items to style her with.

Setup Two, Outfit Three
After a quick outfit change, we returned to setup two for a few minutes. I love the entirely neutral color palette of these images below!

Setup Four, Outfit Three
As the evening light began to fade, we moved to the back of the studio to the final setup. I wanted to create a “glam plant lady” vibe with this set. I really like pairing shades of pink with vibrant greenery!

Regina and I had so much fun together! I am so thankful that she trusted me to make her birthday special.
