One year ago today, Matt and I officially adopted Quorra! We had been fostering her for a few weeks and realized quickly that she was a perfect addition to our family.
Not only is she a great companion, but Quorra also makes a for a great subject for portraiture! Quorra is a willing and cooperative subject, sitting politely with a smile for photographs.
When I would like to try out a new trick or lens, Quorra remains my most available subject. She sits patiently while I play with subframing or backlighting.
I love to feature delicate flowers in her photos -fresh blooms humanize her sweet face.
Additionally, I think the use of fresh blossoms in these double-exposure portraits highlights her sweet and gentle personality.
I’ve found that Quorra’s features lend themselves well to photographs of dramatic tone!
This past year with Quorra has been a wonderful one, and I look forward to having her here (and photographing her) for many years to come!

On a gloriously clear June morning, Emily + I set out on a Matthews, NC greenway for a styled portrait session.
styled session: conceptual photography shoot with curated wardrobe, makeup, hair, + props
The concept for this styled portrait session is “sun goddess.”
I took the opportunity to play with my new lens (Canon 50mm 1.4) while we had some quality backlighting to work with!
A maxi dress is a great choice for a portrait photography session -it easily adds movement + drama!
A wide-brimmed sunhat both adds texture + a natural frame around Emily’s face.
All photography made with my Canon 5d iii DSLR, Canon 85 mm lens + Canon 50 mm 1.4 lens.
What do you think -did we nail the concept?

Have you ever found yourself at a loss when selecting your outfit for a photography session? Below are some seasonally-inspired looks to help inform your wardrobe decisions for summer portraits!
Your portrait session is about you, so don’t be afraid to dress casually if you’re a jeans + tee sort of gal! For this outfit, I paired my favorite rose tee with neutral olive green shorts.
To make my rose tee + olive shorts more interesting, I threw on a matching large-print floral kimono. This easy layer elevates my casual ensemble from basic to notable! I selected comfy Vans + simple jewelry to complete the look.
An A-line dress is a great choice for a portrait session. The shape is figure-flattering + the full skirt provides visual interest with every movement! The textured overlay adds one more pleasing component.
I styled this outfit with ballet-inspired black flats, a slim belt, and simple silver jewelry. I chose accessories with curved + tied shapes -braided belt, bow necklace, ankle-ribboned slippers- for continuity.
Rompers are squarely on-trend for summer, so why not wear one to your portrait session?
This lily-printed evergreen romper feels like a feminine sundress with its wrap-style bodice + butterfly sleeves. To accent this piece, I donned matching caramel open-toed booties + braided belt. A set of hand-made tassel earrings is the only jewelry I wore.
All photography shot by me with my Canon 40D paired with my Tamron 24-70mm lens with the help of my remote shutter release.

The cherry on top of a wonderful May week was this pet portrait session!
Gracie is a vibrant, 4-year-old Weimaraner. She casts winsome grins towards everyone she meets!
I paused many times between snaps to reward her with the attention she begged for.
I loved capturing her in action as she tore across the yard in pursuit of her favorite tennis ball.
That tennis ball demands her attention!
I loved playing with and photographing sweet Gracie! I find pet portrait sessions like these to be very personally rewarding.
All photography captured with my Canon 5d III and Tamron 24-70mm lens.

In May, I had the exciting opportunity to work with NC business Body Helix! This company provides high-quality compression wraps for athletes of all kinds.
According to the Body Helix website (www.bodyhelix.com), their products help both reduce inflammation + increase circulation to the area hugged by one of their compression wraps. This means that Body Helix wearers benefit from less injuries + faster recoveries!
Body Helix wraps are fabricated with non-slip and ultra-stretchy material (no adjustments or restricted movements)! The company’s website states, “You can continue to play your game, your way, without limits.”
The compression fabric is made with closed-cell technology; this means that Body Helix wraps don’t trap sweat or bacteria.
Body Helix offers a wide variety of compression wraps. If it hurts when you work out, Body Helix has a solution for you!

On a balmy May evening, I met Beth + Don at a local park in Matthews, NC for their lovebirds photography session.
The happy couple barely needed encouragement from me; they grinned + joked merrily as I photographed them
As they smiled and posed, the two discussed their upcoming anniversary plans. In two weeks, Beth + Don will have been married for 37 years!
Beth + Don lead full lives, sharing their hearts with nine children and six grandchildren.
Capturing sweet moments between best friends like these is one of the best things about being a photographer!

Have you ever found yourself at a loss when selecting your outfit for a photography session? Below are some seasonally-inspired looks to help inform your wardrobe decisions for spring portraits!
Solid-colored pieces with textured details like this dress lend themselves well to portraiture. The pleated neckline, gathered waist, and lace hem add visual interest without distracting from composition or subject.
I styled the dress with simple elements -a gold Kendra Scott necklace, a braided belt, and a pair of gold ballet flats.
Choosing an outfit with slimming elements can help boost confidence for a photography session. The color-blocking panels on the floral trousers are particularly flattering!
The neckline cutout subtly elevates this shirt from basic to sophisticated.
Large, tri-tone floral prints on a dark base like this are interesting without drawing too much attention away from the subject of the portrait.
I paired the dress with pink loafers that matched the floral print. Comfortable + sturdy shoes like these are a great choice for outdoor portrait photography sessions!
Photography captured with my Canon 40D, Tamron 24-70mm lens, and wireless shutter release.
